How to Airbrush Pinups book on Pre-order

Filed under: Uncategorized — edwardreed @ 1:04 am

The book I contributed an instructional article is now available at Wolfgang Publications and soon at Amazon.com
Check out the book with cover by Edward! (dats me!)

How to Airbrush Pinups is a collection of 7 instructional sequences done by well-known and experienced airbrush artists including Edward Reed, Steve Nunez, Susan Heidi, Liz Austin, and Tom Nguyen. Each photo sequence starts with the artist’s sketch, before moving, step-by-step, to the finished panel. The human form, the human face, and skin tones, are three topics that beginning artists struggle to get right. And it is these three topics that make up much of the discussion in this new book. Each chapter includes a Q&A with the artist. These interviews allow the reader to experience the artist, one-on-one. This is a chance to learn not only which airbrush the artist prefers, but also how they learned their skills, who inspires them and how to avoid the typical mistakes. The styles seen in How to Airbrush Pinups run the gamut from retro pinup and Vargas-style work of Edward Reed to modern stylized pinups of Tom Nguyen. Each artist adds his or her own spin to the classic female shape, and each explains in both words and photos how to create the allure that makes pin-up art one of the most popular art forms in the world. In Progress…

Filed under: Uncategorized — edwardreed @ 1:49 am

Hello gang!
I hope everyone is having a great holiday weekend.
I have spent much of today working on a pinup for an instructional book on how to paint pinups of which I have few morsels of information on… I learned it will be available sometime in the fall of 2009. There are 10 artists in it but I am only aware of two others otherwise I have no idea who else is in it. I am familiar with the other two and they are better artists than me so I am in good company! One is a DC Comics artist that has some books and dvd’s out by major publishers. I have gotten to know him through online art groups, myspace and via his weekly live webcam show… he is so funny and a real cool guy… some of you might have heard of him (Tom Nguyen) Tom has inked and drawn everyone from Batman to Green Lantern to Justice League to the new Ghostbusters series. His book ‘Incredible Comics with Tom Nguyen: The Ultimate Guide to Creating Kick-Ass Comic Art” is widely considered the best ‘How To’ guide.

I will be pulling a late-nighter in an attempt to finish my portion of the contribution. Its an old school style pinup done in the same technique as Alberto vargas and George petty… not much different from the firefighter girl demonstration as seen in my pinup book from SQP.
For someone that hasn’t hand painted but worked digitally for the past 5 years its coming along pretty nicely so far. I will be dusting the cobwebs off my airbrush and firing it up tonight… I hope I can remember how to use it! ;-)

Here is a sneak peak at my progress and to give you an idea of just how tiny and delicate this illustration is…
